Old Tour of San Juan del Norte – Greytown
Greytown also known as San Juan del Norte was once ruled by the Spanish Empire only to later become part of a free English harbor that was notable for experiencing a commercial peak in the XVIII century.
In the middle of the XIX century, due to the American gold rush, a transport businessman named Cornelio Vanderbilt opened a route between New York and San Francisco that would cross Nicaragua through the San Juan River and was named “Ruta del Oro” (the Gold Path).
The tour that we propose consists of a historical and cultural route where we will visit four different colonial cemeteries: Fragata Salina, the British Cemetery, the Catholic Cemetery and the Mason Cemetery.
We will also get to know the construction ruins of an interoceanic canal and an old dredge from 1890. Later, we will arrive at the tidal mouth where the San Juan River and the Indio River meet the Caribbean Sea.
We will end in the Azul Lagoon where we will be able to rest and enjoy nature.
